It's Over

Last Thursday was my last day to go to the office.  I had never gone through a company closure before.  It was quite a surreal experience.  I was chosen to close two offices.  The first one had no wireless connection available.  It was very odd when the communications tech came in and shut it all down.  No phone (we did not have cell phones then), no internet, no e-mail.  It was very disturbing to not be able to communicate with the outside world.  I can see how a technological apocalypse could have devastating and long-lasting effects on society.  It is amazing how much one comes to rely on the technologies in our lives.  It is also amazing what happens to an individual once these are taken away.  I found myself just wandering around the office and thought I had nothing to do.  This wasn't strictly true, however.  I had my Kindle and my personal laptop and could have read or wrote blog posts in Word to transfer to here.  But I felt so lost and isolated that I could not bring myself to do anything but wait until it was time for me to go home.  It was almost like a part of myself had been taken away.  I never want to be in that position again.  So, now we have cell phones so that neither one of us is ever unable to communicate.
