Dead Lilac

We have this lilac bush (well, more like a carcass) at the end of our porch.  Our landlord has given us permission to cut it down.  I don't know that I really want to get rid of it.  It's actually kind of pretty with all of the moss growing on it.  The reason it's dead is because the eave trough on the porch has never had a down spout and the water from the porch roof runs directly on the base of the bush and has basically drowned it.  It fits in well with the Oregon landscape with it's gnarled limbs and moss.  Also, the tree frogs love it because it is always a moist and cool area for them to hang out.  Now, instead of cutting it out, I think that we will plant a star jasmine next to it and let it take it over.  It will bloom all summer and the fragrance is just so awesome.  I will have to add the down spout so that the jasmine doesn't meet the same fate as he poor lilac.   Ha Ha!!  I was even able to get a picture of it while the sun was shining.
